A new law is making it easier for first responders to help out during a major disaster.

Under the new state law, businesses can't fire volunteer firefighters or ambulance squad members who take off from their regular jobs to respond to a state of emergency. But employer don't have to pay workers during their leave.

The new law goes into effect December 22.
