New law empowers hairstylists to recognize, discuss domestic abuse

Posted

A new law is capitalizing on the unique bond between hairstylist and their clients by offering training on how recognize and discuss domestic abuse.

The legislation in the state of Illinois went into effect January of 2017. Under the new law cosmetologists, including barbers, nail technicians, and hair braiders are required to undergo a mandatory hour long training session where they learn about resources they can offer to clients dealing with abuse.

"Domestic violence is significantly an under reported crime," Mia Thornton with the Haven House told 7 Eyewitness News.
