A new free mobile application is now available to give New York families and caregivers information about rights and resources for people with developmental disabilities.

The nonprofit Harvey and Ellen Weisenberg Special Needs Resource Corp. has been accepting tax-deductible donations to build, update and expand it.

The foundation says the Weisenberg Special Needs App recently became available on iPhones and iPads, following a launch on Android devices.

Retired Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg, whose disabled son Ricky lives in a state-supported residence, says it's intended to help fill gaps in families' knowledge about applicable laws, as well as programs, support and successes.

Weisenberg sponsored Jonathan's Law in 2007. It mandates notifying families of abuse allegations in state-licensed facilities.

Program director David Feldman says they hope to expand its scope to other states and other disabilities.
