It's not exactly a welcome mat.
A sign across the street from a Buffalo homeless shelter reads “Dangerous: Dark-Dirty-Environment”
The sign was posted by a homeowner living across the street from the Harbor House. Off-camera, the homeowner says ever since the shelter moved across the street they have had serious safety concerns, but wouldn't elaborate. The sign itself has been up for months.
Staff at the Harbor House says it's unfortunate the sign is there.
“They should be more shocked that those conditions were allowed to exist that people had to live like that. That should be the shock, not that the people are there, but the fact that people need help,” said Dale Zuchlewski, the executive director of Homeless Alliance of WNY. “Harbor House has been in the community for a long time and they're just such a key player. It's just disappointing that they have to deal with this from time to time.”
"We strive to have good neighbor relations and have always taken a proactive approach, working with neighbors, if problems arise. We have expanded our security patrols, having our guards patrol the block several times throughout the night; we have positioned security cameras to extend view beyond the space we occupy, and we have invited neighbors to share concerns and offer suggestions," said Nancy Singh, the CEO at Harbor House.
