Nearly 900 comments have been submitted to the state Department of Environmental Conservation on the proposed expansion of the Northeast's only licensed hazardous waste landfill.

After being extended four times, the comment period for the CWM Chemical Services landfill in the Niagara County town of Porter ended on Nov. 25. An issues conference, followed by a trial-like hearing, will be scheduled in coming months.

DEC spokesman Peter Constantakes tells the Buffalo News the agency received four requests for "party status," the right to take part in hearings on whether a state permit will be granted.

Niagara County and several towns are fighting the expansion. The Town of Porter agreed to remain silent in exchange for $3 for every ton of waste dumped in the new landfill.
