Life is face-paced. No kidding. Add to our busy schedules the ways that technology has changed our daily routines--allowing us to text, email and use social media to connect--and you may wonder: Is anyone a good neighbor anymore?

The folks at Nextdoor.com, a nationwide network of community websites, decided to find out. Its Nextdoor Neighborhood Report "surveyed adults across the country to gain insight on the impact these changes have had in today’s communities."

MORE: Read the report here

Key findings include:

  • 92% of Americans consider themselves to be good neighbors
  • 8 out 10 Americans agree that their neighbors are willing to help each other
  • 89% of Americans agree that it is important to have an easy way to communicate with their neighbors but only 14% of Americans have a way to communicate with most or all of their neighbors
  • 72% of Americans knew more of their neighbors growing up than they do now
  • 24% of Americans regularly attend neighborhood functions
  • 79% of Americans agree that people in their neighborhood can be trusted
  • Only 9% of Americans are part of a neighborhood watch group

What makes a good neighbor?

The Nextdoor Neighborhood Report found that certain factors, activities and characteristics tend to make a person seem more neighborly; for example, dog ownership, walking in the community and using social media at least once a day.

According to the survey, qualities of a good neighbor include:

  • Respectful of personal space or boundaries 56%
  • Friendly/sociable 55%
  • Offers/willing to help neighbors out when they need it 46%
  • Takes good care of their yard/property 45%
  • Willing to help other neighbors in times of crisis or natural disaster 44%
