As many as 750,000 New Yorkers could now be eligible for the federal supplemental nutrition assistance program -or snaps - according to an announcement from Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

A new change in the program's rules states that families of three or more whose total montly income is $2,512 or less are now eligible for SNAPS, Cuomo's office said. Because of this decision, the federal government will be providing more than $600 million in additional funding to New York for SNAPS benefits.

Cuomo commented that it is unacceptable for the state to allow anyone to go hungry, and that this policy adjustment brings New York one step closer to ending hunger in the state.
