The Amherst man who caused the hours-long standoff on the Thurway  Monday afternoon is a court officer sergeant in the Erie County court.

The New York Courts confirmed to 7 Eyewitness News John Pezzino's position in the courts.

According to the New York State Police, Pezzino has been charged with fleeing and resisting arrest and has been taken to a hospital for treatment.

NYSP say over 20 vehicles and a helicopter were deployed to deal with Pezzino, described yesterday as "emotionally disturbed."

The I-90 was closed between the Batavia and Le Roy exits for several hours Monday afternoon during the standoff, reopening around 6:15 p.m.
