Charges dropped against man accused of smashing Virgin Mary statue

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) - Charges against a man accused of smashing a Virgin Mary statue at a church in Buffalo have been dropped following a psychiatric evaluation.

Police say 18-year-old Kalil Colbert destroyed the statue with a baseball bat and left a note inside the statue.

Judge Craig Hannah previously issued an issue of protection to the church to have him stay away in Buffalo City Court.

Colbert had been charged with aggravated harassment and a hate crime.

“Following a forensic examination, the charges against the defendant were reduced then dismissed on Monday morning before Judge Hannah in Buffalo City Court,” according to Erie County District Attorney John Flynn.
