Free tax preparation services you might not be aware of

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — Starting Monday January 27th, people can begin filing their income tax returns online with the IRS.

Before you pay, what could be hundreds-of-dollars, to have your taxes prepared and filed, why not consider using some free tax preparation services for people in the Buffalo/Niagara region?

Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Buffalo is starting its "Free Tax Prep Program" on January 28th. It is important to make an appointment by calling 211 if you live in the City of Buffalo, or call (716) 712-2060 if you live in Niagara County. Households earning less than $56,000 qualify for the 100% free service.

Consumer Credit Counseling has two locations to help people in Niagara County:

Orleans/Niagara BOCES: 50 Main Street, Lockport
Tuesdays 3:30 – 7:30 pm

Pinnacle Community Services (Formerly known as Family and Children Services) 1522 Main Street, Niagara Falls
Wednesdays 3:30 – 7:30 pm

Appointments for this service can be scheduled by calling 712-2060. Household income must be approximately $56,000 or less. Appointments are available on Tuesdays in Lockport and on Wednesdays in Niagara Falls from January 28th through April 8, 2020.

UB School of Management 2020 Free Tax Preparation will be providing a first-come, first-served option to have your taxes done on select days in February, March and April.

South Campus - 403 Hayes Hall - 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23, 29 and March 1, 7 and 8. (Latest recommended arrival time is 3 p.m.)

North Campus - 110 Jacobs Management Center - 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on March 29, April 4, 5 11 and 12. (Latest recommended arrival time is 3 p.m.)

The United Way

As another option to file 2019 taxes, individuals who earned under $69,000 can go directly to the following link www.unitedway.org/myfreetaxes to electronically file both their federal and state taxes on their own, for free. Software is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Online help is also available, at specific times. See the website for more information. “Myfreetaxes” is a Facilitated Self Assistance filing service sponsored by the IRS.
