AMHERST, N.Y. (WKBW) — Thanks to Erie County's mapping of COVID-19, you can break down where the most cases are on by town, city or zip code.
Previously, the most cases were in the 14215 zip code (118), that's parts of the East Side of Buffalo and parts of Cheektowaga. Now, the most cases are in 14221 (128), that's Amherst, including the Village of Williamsville, and parts of Clarence. Roughly 15,000 more people live in the Williamsville zip code. Per capita, the virus is more prevalent in the East Side and Cheektowaga zip code.
Brian Kulpa, the Amherst Town Supervisor believes the reason for the uptick in cases is due to increased testing.
"There is a test center here in Amherst. So, it is a little more convenient for people to get tested within that zip code. It's right in that zip code," said Kulpa.
He also believes people travel to the Williamsville area, even in stay-at-home order.
“We've got a lot of people who come into that zip code to buy groceries to buy hardware and we would be looking for, ultimately, how much transmission is there into the zip code,” added Kulpa.
Kulpa said, his focus is on preventing the spread of COVID-19, and looking forward, he and his team are discussing when and how to re-open the community.
“We're hoping that this is the beginning of the end. But, we still have a long way to go,” said Kulpa.
