BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — Many Western New Yorkers travel South for the winter ending up back at home with family in Puerto Rico.

That's where many locals were when large earthquakes rocked the island over the past few days.

Hispanic Heritage Council Secretary Tamara Alsace shared what she called a “really scary” situation as she was awakened by an early morning quake Tuesday.

Dr. Emeterio Otero lives in Rochester and grew up in Western New York, he has been vacationing on the island for a few weeks now.

“It was like a scene out of The Exorcist, the bed just started shaking,” he said describing the moment he was woken up by the second quake.

Both have plans to travel back to Buffalo in the coming days and weeks.

So far, their travel plans have not been impacted.
