WEST SENECA, N.Y. (WKBW) — A staple in West Seneca is closing its doors for good this week.
Scharf’s German Restaurant and Bar on Clinton Street will close June 29, according to the restaurant’s Facebook page.
"It's a real loss to the community that this is going to close down, especially the German community," said customer Bruce Meyer.
The Scharf’s Family and Staff would like to thank you for your many years of support and friendship. It is all of you that we will truly miss,” the post said.
According to owner Jerry Scharf, it went into Chapter 11 bankruptcy a year ago, and couldn’t recover. The restaurant almost closed once before in 2012 when costs got too high.
"Western New York wasn't going to let me close and they saved us. My bills were paid off in a month and right now we're not in the same situation."
After hearing the news, dozens of people stopped by for lunch to reminisce about their favorite memories.
"Probably close to 40 years, maybe 45 years, I remember coming when I was in high school," said customer Keith Berhans.
People have been reaching out all day to offer help and express their sorrow to see the restaurant go, according to Scharf.
"These are the kind of things that I'm gonna miss, these people coming through to help you when the chips are down," said Scharf.
The restaurant’s been in business since 1967.
