WEST SENECA, N.Y. (WKBW) — West Seneca police are issuing a warning to residents about thefts related to Xbox gamertags and accounts recently.

Officials handled a recent report which a family had over $1,200 stolen from their Xbox account.

Police say criminals are changing login information, gaining access to bank accounts and making unauthorized purchases on other accounts through the gaming console.

The reminder from police is to never give out your passwords and be sure to check your user settings frequently as well as monitor your bank accounts.

7 Eyewitness News spoke with gaming experts at Oogie games in Tonawanda who say the best thing to do is purchase pre-paid gift cards to buy games on the cloud.

"You know what game you want what you need, so you just get a pre-paid card," said manager Nathan Miller. "Just go to the store, get a gift card and pretend there's no credit card option."

Police say when you or a family member accesses the Internet using any gaming console you open yourself up to cyber criminals.
