PEMBROKE, N.Y. (WKBW) — A project that has been about 15 years in the making is facing another delay.

Representatives with the VA National Cemetery Administration say the next phase of the region’s new veteran’s cemetery will not be under construction until 2022.

The first phase of the project is currently underway, and veterans are expected to be laid to rest by November of next year.

“We had trouble buying the land, then we had a budget bust when we last went out for proposals to start the construction,” says Anne Marie Sweet-Abshire, National Director of Construction and Financial Management for NCA.

Burials at the cemetery will be free to anyone who qualifies, however families who would like their loved ones to be moved to the future veteran’s cemetery will need to pay for removal and reburial.
