BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — A day in the park gave some University at Buffalo students a chance to track some visitors on their way down south.

UB students with the Department of Environment and Sustainability spent the afternoon Tuesday at Riverside Park working on a project to tag monarch butterflies.

The butterflies come from Canada and make a layover in Western New York during their flight to Mexico.

The students placed plastic stickers on the wings of the butterflies and will follow their movements during their migration.

According to a faculty member, each sticker is serialized, so when the tags are removed in Mexico, it will be known that they are one of the ones from Riverside Park.

The butterflies spend all winter in Mexico and then fly back to the Gulf Coast.
