BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — Buffalo police are looking for whoever shot two people Buffalo's University Heights neighborhood overnight, resulting in their deaths.

Officers responded to the call at a home on the 110 block of Merrimac Street around 2:15 a.m. Friday morning for the original report of a stabbing.

Police say upon arrival a 21-year-old woman and 26-year-old man who lived in the lower apartment were each shot once and killed.

7 Eyewitness News first arrived at the scene around 2:45 a.m. Our overnight photographer observed three ambulances, one fire truck and multiple police cars on scene. Crime tape surrounded the home. Officers could be seen going through the dark lower level of the home with flashlights. A heavy police presence was observed in the back of the house, and some officers were also searching the side of the house with flashlights. Other officers could be seen going up and down the block with flashlights, looking up driveways and in neighbors' yards.

The ambulances left just after 3 a.m. without transporting anyone, taking three empty stretchers and putting them back into the vehicles. AMR told 7 Eyewitness News it did not transport because two people were dead.

It's an area heavily populated with University at Buffalo students. Many say they are uneasy this violence happened so close to home.

"Clearly anything could happen, and it's scary it happened on my street," said one student.

A neighbor tells us, they heard yelling right before the sound of a gun shot.

Public records indicate the home is a two-family residence owned by a Long Island man. As of 6:15 a.m. it was not immediately clear whether the homeowner has been notified.

If you have any information on who did this, you're urged to call the Buffalo police Confidential TIPCALL Line at 847-2255.
