BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — The New York Department of Education is recommending the Lockport Central School District delay its use of facial recognition technology.

The DOE is reviewing the district's privacy assessment to ensure that student data will be protected with the addition of the new technology. Officials with the state say they ave not come to the conclusion that the district has demonstrated the necessary framework is in place to protect the privacy of data subjects and properly secure the data.

The district announced it would begin implementing the Aegis facial recognition system June 3. The components of the system have already been installed.
