ALBANY, N.Y. (WKBW) — Students learning exclusively from home who have not received all required vaccinations for attending school will no longer be shut out of the learning process in New York State.
The New York State Department of Health has issued new guidance to school administrators that allows these students to attend remote learning sessions as long as the student intends to receive all necessary vaccinations within 30 days.
Previously, the state banned remote students who were not up-to-date on vaccines from all online learning sessions, even though they were not stepping foot inside a school building.
If the child's school does not receive proof of all vaccinations within 30 days, the student will be locked out of all remote learning until proof of vaccination is received.
Since the school year began, several parents have complained to 7 Eyewitness News about their child or children being kicked out of remote classes because they did not meet the vaccination requirements.
In its letter to administrators, the health department acknowledged "there has been difficulty in obtaining required vaccinations as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in inability for some students to meet the vaccination requirements."
