SOUTHERN TIER, N.Y. (WKBW) — Both the Jamestown and Dunkirk Police Departments are spreading the word about an Emergency Alert issued in error.

Southern Tier residents who received the alert on their phone Tuesday are being told to disregard the message. According to Jamestown Police there was an error setting up the iPAWS system.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office released a statement on the issue Tuesday afternoon.
"On 10-15-19 at 1:00pm, several area residents received an Emergency Alert on their smart phones. This alert was a computer glitch, accidentally sending an alert from FEMA's iPAWS (Public Alert and Warning System). There was no emergency situation in regards to the alert that the public received."

At this point it's unclear how many people received the erroneous alert.
