BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — The Erie County Sheriff's Office is warning of a new phone scam that uses fear in an attempt to steal your money.
The scammer, who identifies himself as 'Sergeant Mason from the Erie County Sheriff's Office,' tells the caller they have a warrant for their arrest for missing jury duty, then instructs them to buy a Green Dot card to pay a fine and void the warrant.
The county received two complaints about this scam Tuesday.
Law enforcers say if you receive one of these calls, you should hang up immediately. The sheriff's office never calls anyone requesting payment for fines or outstanding warrants.
