TONAWANDA (WKBW) — The start of Lent means the return of fish fry season across western New York.

Wednesday night, the Kenilworth Volunteer Fire Company brought back its popular event.

Every year, the fire hall transforms into a full service restaurant, serving as many as 1,000 fish fries on a typical Friday night.

"They love the dinner," said fire company president Jim McGee. "We hear that from people that frequent restaurants in the area that they look forward to coming here. So it's nice to know they're getting a good meal and its nice to know they're helping out the community helping out the fire department."

The fish fry costs $11.

The fire company donates some of the proceeds to dozens of local charities. They also use the money to buy food for local food banks.
