SHELDON, N.Y. (WKBW) — State Police are now hunting for the hit-and-run driver who injured two girls and killed a dog.

The incident happened Thursday night around 8:15 on Dutch Hollow Road near State Route 78 in the Town of Sheldon.

Two girls, aged twelve and fourteen were hit while walking their Australian Shepard on the grass next to the roadway. According to investigators, a dark colored vehicle swerved onto the lawn, striking both girls and killing the dog. The 14-year-old girl suffered minor injuries. The 12-year-old was seriously injured, but is expected to recover through physical therapy and surgery.

It's the emotional recovery that the 12-year-old's mother, Farley Bridgman Crow, said may be the hardest.

"The fact that my daughter got hit while walking her dog, I'm just at a loss," she said. "We're supposed to be able to do that. That's something that you do with your family, and now we can't even do that."

Investigators say the 2017 Chevrolet Trax in question has been located and they are working to determine who was driving at the time of the collision.

If anyone has information is asked to call State Police at 585-344-6200.
