AMHERST, N.Y. (WKBW) — A person who has tested positive for COVID-19 was in Amherst Middle School twice this week before in-person learning began, the district announced today.

The individual was in the middle school building on Tuesday and Wednesday. The first day of student attendance was Thursday.

On Thursday the district announced its first confirmed case within the district but said the individual in that case had not been on campus recently.

Superintendent Anthony Panella says the district will notify parents, teachers and staff by email about confirmed cases until the state's new COVID-19 dashboard is up and running. The governor's office said the dashboard would be online this week but it is still not operational as of this afternoon.

Panella said the district will work closely with the Erie County Department of Health on contact tracing for all confirmed cases.
