ELLINGTON, N.Y. (WKBW) — One man is dead following a crash involving a Jeep and a gasoline tanker.

The crash shut down Route 83 in Ellington early Friday morning.

Police identified the driver of the 2003 Jeep Cherokee as 22-year-old Ramon Spunaugle of Conewango Valley.

The driver of the tanker told New York State Police he was driving north on Route 83 when he saw a vehicle driving south with the high beam headlights on. According to the driver, the Jeep drove across the center lane and collided with the tanker.

The tanker ended up in a ditch leaking fuel. The Chautauqua County HazMat team and state Department of Environmental Conservation were called to the scene of the accident as a result of the leaking fuel. The Jeep was heavily damaged.

Officials will perform an autopsy at ECMC to determine how Spunaugle died.
