Buffalo's oldest resident, Mamie Lang Kirkland, died Saturday at the age of 111.

Kirkland was born in Ellisville, Mississippi on September 3, 1908. Her family fled the area after her father feared he was going to be lynched. Kirkland was only seven at the time.

She eventually moved to Buffalo at age 15, and called it home until she died.

She was one of five children, and the mother of 10.

She refused to revisit Mississippi for 100 years. She decided to visit her birth place in 2008. Her son, Tabaru Kirkland, has made a documentary about his mother's life called "100 Years from Mississippi," and it is scheduled to be released in the fall of 2020.

Her story is displayed at the National Legacy Museum in Montgomery, Alabama.
