BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — Veteran Buffalo police officer Juan Phillips shook hands with a line of doctors, nurses, colleagues and friends Thursday outside ECMC - his home away from home since March 21 when he first showed symptoms of the Coronavirus.

But after 103 days in the hospital, he finally went home.

Two days after being admitted, doctors placed Phillips on a ventilator for a month.

"It affected my body, it affected my shoulders, it affected my left lung. So we're still doing testing, we're still examining me, why it attacked me the way that it did," he said. "There was a couple of long nights where I actually said why me. But I also quickly remembered to be thankful that my life was spared."

Phillips has been on the force for 38 years. He said he looks forward to being able to wear his uniform again.

"One of the things in my time here is realizing the love. The love from all those that I knew and did not know that shared a prayer, that took a moment, that shared a prayer," he said.
