NIAGARA FALLS, ONTARIO (WKBW) — A North Tonawanda man is facing more than a half dozen charges, including assaulting an officer, after police say he crossed the Rainbow Bridge into Canada without stopping and led officers on a chase that ended with a crash.

Niagara Regional Police say Harpreet Singh, 33, drove a Ford Explorer with Florida license plates across the bridge and through border services about 2 p.m. Monday. A chase ensued, which ended in a crash with a marked police vehicle near Second Avenue and Kitchener Street.

When officers tried to take Harpreet into custody, investigators say he assaulted one of the officers, forcing police to use a TASER on him. The officer suffered minor injuries.

While taking Harpreet to the hospital for evaluation, police say he damaged the police cruiser by kicking the window cage. After arriving at the hospital, he bit a nurse, causing minor injuries, police said.

Investigators say oxycodone and hydrocodone were found in Harpreet's possession.

He remained in the custody of Niagara Regional Police while awaiting a bail hearing Thursday.
