NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WKBW) — The Niagara SPCA is raising funds for a 3-year-old boxer/shepherd mix so she can have surgery to make sure she lives a more comfortable life.

The boxer/shepherd mix, Lucy, arrived at the Niagara SPCA with a chronic ear infection due to her ears not being cleaned for a long time.

The SPCA says the infection causes her to shake her head in search of relief throughout the day.

Medicine is not able to reach her ear canal to treat the infection so it was determined she will need a total ear canal ablation to provide her with comfort and prevent any further infections, according to the SPCA.

Although it will provide comfort and prevent further infection, the total ear canal ablation will leave Lucy deaf.

The surgery will need to be performed by a specialist outside the SPCA and will cost an estimated $6,500.

With the hope that the community rallies together to support Lucy, the SPCA says she would have surgery on one ear and surgery on the second ear would follow once the first is healed.

“Lucy is an exceptionally sweet dog who we’ve all grown very fond of at the shelter,” said Executive Director Tim Brennan. “We will ensure that she has the best quality of life no matter the cost, but her unexpected surgery is at a much larger expense than most, so we wanted to share her story in the hopes we can rally the community to help sweet Lucy with us because the homeless and neglected animals of Niagara SPCA deserve the best.”

There is a GoFundMe set up for Lucy or you can donate on Facebook.
