BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — The Niagara Falls Police Department is bringing back the Safe Shopping Initiative.

The program places more patrols in the city's business districts to help shoppers and business feel safe. Officers will be policing shopping areas for several hours during certain times.

The first scheduled times have been posted:

  • May 14, 2019 2:00pm - 6:00pm City Market
  • May 15, 2019 12:00pm—8:00pm Top’s Plaza (1000 Portage Rd.)
  • May 16, 2019 2:00pm—8:00pm Top’s Plaza (7200 Niagara Falls Blvd.)
  • May 24, 2019 12:00pm—8:00pm Top’s Plaza (1000) Portage Rd. )

The program costs the city about $50,000 a year. The mayor called on lawmakers to approve the funding for this year after a recent series of crimes in the business districts.
