Niagara County Sheriff's Office identifies body of woman recovered in Lower Niagara River

PORTER, N.Y. (WKBW) — The Niagara County Sheriff's Office says it has identified the body of a woman who was recovered from the Lower Niagara River in June 2020.

The sheriff's office says following a DNA investigation, authorities have identified the body as Jie Yu of China.

According to the sheriff's office, Yu was reported missing to the Niagara Regional Police Service in Ontario, after being observed going over the falls in Niagara Falls, Ontario in December 2019.

In June 2020, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office received a citizen's call, reporting a possible body in the area of 3719 Lower River Road in Youngstown.

A coroner then secured the body, where the criminal investigative unit began investigating.

On February 10th, officers along with help from Niagara Regional Police Service confirmed a DNA match recovered from the Niagara River, along with DNA from a family member.

The criminal investigative unit is continuing its investigation.
