PORTLAND, N.Y. (WKBW) — A Dunkirk man was killed after a police pursuit ended in a crash in Chautauqua County, according to New York State police.

The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Police said troopers initiated a pursuit after observing 44-year-old Joseph Damico of Dunkirk operating a motor vehicle west on State Route 5 in Dunkirk.

According to police, the pursuit lasted about six minutes and came to an end when Damico struck the rear of another vehicle. Both vehicles exited the road and came to a rest in a steep, high-banked drainage ditch.

Police said Damico was pronounced dead at the scene and the other driver did not sustain any injuries.

The investigation is ongoing.
