According to the Town of Amherst and its partner Modern Disposal, it's getting too expensive to recycle certain items.

Specifically, colored glass.

So, now you will have to toss most of those wine and beer bottles straight into the garbage.

The town says this is happening because of a global recycling crisis affecting all of the US after some Asian countries started limiting the recyclable materials being imported.

This means that all over - places are getting less money for their recyclables, so, people are paying more to actually recycle.

The cost of recycling has not gone up yet, but the town says that is likely a certainty in the future.

For now, it is using a new acronym to help residents know how to properly recycle:

C.L.E.A.N

C: Clean and rinse out all plastic containers! It is vital that we all try to reduce contamination levels to help the environment!

L: Leave out any colored glass! Colored glass is no longer recommended for curbside pick-up since it’s hard to recycle, you may take colored glass to various private recycling centers around Town for better opportunities.

E: Empty cardboard boxes of all plastic wrap, film, and Styrofoam! before breaking them down. Extra cardboard can be placed next to your tote.

A: Anything you’re not sure if it belongs in recycling? If it’s not on the list, it doesn’t go in your recycling tote. Call us at 631-7119 and we will assist you.

N: No plastic bags or plastic film from packaging of any kind!!! Plastic bags can go to various retailers across WNY for recycling, please don’t place them in your tote or use them to package materials, they can increase our costs to recycle and ruin the recycling center’s machinery
