LOCKPORT, N.Y. (WKBW) — The Niagara County Sheriff's Office says a man rescued a dog after its leash was tied to a cinder block and thrown into the Erie Canal in Lockport.

A 66-year-old man rescued the dog, a pit bull, in the area of Day Road Bridge September 15. According to the sheriff's office, the dog's leash was tied to a cinder block and the cinder block was thrown into the Erie Canal.

Deputies were told a Black male who left the area in a gray or brown car was seen with the dog shortly before the rescue occurred.

The dog was turned over to dog control officers.
