BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — Buffalo Fire officials say a man was swimming in the Niagara River at the foot of Ontario Street when he struggled in the water and nearly drown.

According to firefighters, the 24-year-old man was struggling in the water for two and a half minutes when he became unconscious. A grandfather who was at the scene with his grandson saw the man in the water and rushed in to save him.

Fire officials say the man wasn't breathing until he started spitting up water. They say without the bystander, the 24-year-old man probably wouldn't be alive.
