BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — A 27-year-old man pled guilty to assaulting and injuring a border officer at the Peace Bridge.

Police say Adriano Nunez was traveling on a bus from Canada into the United States back in June. During a search, investigators say a border patrol officer discovered gummy candies in a bag. Border patrol officers asked Nunez to place his phone and passport on a table while officers performed a field test on the gummies. According to officers, the Queens man placed his passport on the table but not his phone. Nunez instead retrieved his phone and "manipulated" it with his hands, police say. He resisted police when officers attempted to confiscate the phone.

After officers were able to gain possession of the phone, police say Nunez fled to another area of the building. Officers caught up to Nunez. Investigators say the 27-year-old man resisted police by pushing and kicking at least one officer. The officer suffered abrasions on his knees and elbow.

Nunez pled guilty to forcibly assaulting, resisting, opposing, impeding, intimidating or interfering with a federal officer and causing bodily injury. He faces up to 20 years in prison and $250,000 fine.

Nunez is scheduled to be sentenced on January 31, 2020.
