CLARENCE, N.Y. (WKBW) — A Newstead man turned himself into police after surveillance photos of him taking a donation box were released.

The Erie County Sheriff says 44-year-old William Szalay turned himself in after he was urged by an acquaintance who had seen the video and photos. Szalay admitted that he took a donation box from the 7-Eleven on Main Street in Clarence. The money was being collected for victims of the California wildfires.

Szalay was released on appearance tickets for Clarence Town Court. He's charged with petit larceny.
