Man attempts to transport 30 hockey bags filled with marijuana across Peace Bridge

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — The U.S. Attorney's Office says a Canadian man has been arrested and charged after allegedly attempting to transport 30 hockey bags filled with marijuana across the Peace Bridge.

27-year-old Xiao Liu was charged by criminal complaint with possessing with intent to distribute 100 kilograms or more of marijuana, and importation of marijuana into the United States, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Officials say Liu attempted to cross the Peace Bridge into the United States in a commercial truck on January 10. Liu stated to he was hauling a shipment of wax.

A Customs and Border Protection Officer asked Liu to open the sleeper cab curtain and the officer allegedly discovered black bags filling the cab from the floor to to the ceiling. Officials say Liu stated the bags belonged to a friend and he was taking them to Buffalo.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says the truck was then physically inspected and 30 hockey bags filled with 1,139 vacuum sealed bags of suspected marijuana were discovered.

Liu faces a maximum of 40 years in prison.
