Local funeral home to put plastic bags 'to rest,' offer free reusable bag

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — Beginning March 1st the plastic bag ban will be in effect in New York State, a local funeral home has announced they will put the plastic bag "to rest" ahead of the ban.

Lakseside Memorial Funeral Home announced on Monday, February 3rd and Tuesday, February 4th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. "guest will have an opportunity to help us honor the passing of the plastic grocery bag in New York State, by receiving a free, reusable tote, while supplies last."

The funeral home says they will give out 600 reusable bags in total, one per guest, at their Hamburg location at 4199 Lake Shore Road and West Seneca location at 1340 Union Road.

"Plastic Bag, perished suddenly on January 26, 2020. Born on the cusp of the 1980's, it's life mission was to protect the environment from deforestation. Life achievements throughout its career include transportation of groceries, refuse collection in private bathrooms, pet waste removal and diaper relocation services. Plastic Bag is predeceased by Plastic Straw and survived by Grandfather Paper Bag."

Monday marked the first day Wegmans eliminated plastic bags from stores.
