BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — A local detective received a prestigious award for her work combating human trafficking.

Detective Theresa Nietzel of the Erie County Sheriff's Office was awarded Homeland Security Investigations' (HSI) human trafficking Task Force Officer of the Year at the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference in Chicago. The award recognizes Nietzel’s efforts and investigative work in combating trafficking.

This is the second award Detective Nietzel has received recognizing her efforts in law enforcement. She previously won the Women in Federal Law Enforcement (WIFLE) – Outstanding Contribution of a State or Local Officer on a Federal Task Force.

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office says it has received millions of dollars in grant money to fight human trafficking activities in the region over the years.
