BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — Many of you could be feeling helpless and want to do speak out against the injustices happening all over the country.
Community organizer Marielle Smith of Black Love Resists in the Rust has spent the last three years educating and campaigning for the black community.
Smith says to be an ally, you need to start having conversations about race and listening to concerns people of color have. “Make sure you are following the lead of our voices and what we need to get done and not going ahead and doing what you feel needs to be done," Smith said.
Smith says you can help by supporting and donating to local African American-run businesses and other racial justice organizations.
The George Floyd Memorial Fund has raised more than six-million dollars and continues to rise.
And Smith says Black Love Resists in the Rust is offering more guidance if people need it:
- Educate yourself
- Join a peaceful protest
- Have conversations about race with your family and friends
- Help in the clean up
- Support minority businesses
- Make a donation to any Racial Justice Fund: Black Love Resists in the Rust, George Floyd Memorial Fund, Minnesota Freedom Fund, Black Visions Collective, Reclaim the Block, Campaign Zero.
