AMHERST, N.Y. (WKBW) — Happening today (April 12), Westermeier Martin Dental Care is holding free oral cancer screenings at its facilities.
With over 50,000 new cases of oral cancer each year, every one is urged to take advantage. Symptoms that could indicate oral cancer are:
- difficulty swallowing, chewing or speaking
- an irritation that doesn't go away
- red or white patches
- pain or tenderness
- a lump or crusted area
Anyone can get the disease, both tobacco users and non-users. April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, but Westermeier staff chose this date in particular to honor NFL Hall of Famer Jim Kelly. Kelly wore number 12 jersey through his 11 seasons with the Buffalo Bills. He has fought against squamous cell carcinoma.
The free screenings take place at any three Westermeier locations during normal business hours. No appointment is necessary, but one can be made by calling (716) 508-4547.
