NEW YORK, N.Y. (WKBW) — Do you have a REAL ID? You'll need one if you plan on boarding a plane in 2020.
That's according to the Transportation Security Administration. Starting in October of 2020, New York residents will need an enhanced driver’s license or a REAL ID compatible driver’s license to board a flight, enter federal buildings or military bases.
Officials recommend that if you plan on traveling to upgrade your license to a REAL ID or enhanced license before the deadline.
The enhanced IDs cost $30 plus regular transaction fees. You can board a flight and enter the U.S. coming from Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean with an enhanced ID.
A star is located in the upper right hand corner on REAL IDs in New York. This is an indication that the license meets federal regulations. A U.S. flag is located at the bottom of an enhanced New York driver's license.
New York residents have the option to upgrade to a REAL ID if their license does not have the star in the upper right hand corner. Some other forms of ID such as a valid passport, federal government PIV card or U.S. military ID will be accepted.
To get a REAL ID, residents will need to visit their local New York Department of Motor Vehicles office in person and bring documents that prove they are citizen of the U.S.
