BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — A groundbreaking will be held this Thursday at the Buffalo & Erie County Naval & Military Park for a new statue honoring veterans who have died from PTSD.

The Battle Within Memorial is a life-size silhouette of a soldier carrying two figures with an inscription that reads:

“A tribute to those we will always carry,

and to those we can no longer hold.”

According to the newly formed Battle Within Foundation, the group fueling this mission, "approximately 20 veterans each day are lost to us due to complications from wounds and injuries we cannot see–PTSD."

“It is our sincerest goal that this simple monument will help educate the public to this ongoing tragedy, provide a lifeline to the suffering, and honor our heroes for their service, regardless of where they died,” stated Mark Donnelly, president of the Foundation..

After the monument is unveiled on May 27, the ongoing mission of the Foundation will be to support awareness efforts and connect veterans with medical care.

The memorial will be located at the Buffalo & Erie County Naval & Military Park – Hero’s Walk – between the Afghanistan and Vietnam Memorials.
