(WKBW) — If you own a home or property in Western New York, or anywhere across the state, Tuesday is a big day.

Grievance Day is typically the fourth Tuesday in May. It's your last chance to contest your assessment.

All home and property owners can do this. But before you do, the state says you should first determine if you are assessed fairly. Here's how:

  1. Determine the assessor's estimate of the market value of your property.
  2. Develop your own estimate of the market value of your property.
  3. Talk with an assessor. If such a discussion does not result in a reduction, you may wish to contest.
