Grand Island man killed, family injured in crash near Lake Placid

TOWN OF NORTH ELBA, N.Y. (WKBW) — New York State police say two men are dead and three others injured after a head-on crash in the Town of North Elba near Lake Placid Saturday morning.

Police say 50-year-old Kevin Maras of Grand Island was traveling eastbound on State Route 86 in North Elba and 62-year-old Rene Castonguay of Quebec, Canada was traveling westbound when their vehicles struck head-on just after 9 a.m.

Maras and Castonguay were pronounced dead at the scene.

Maras' wife, 51-year-old Heather Maras was transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont for injuries to her head, neck and spine. The Maras' 18-year-old daughter Sierra was also transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center for hip and leg injuries, their 16-year-old daughter was transported to the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake for facial lacerations.

Police are still investigating the crash and no charges have been filed at this time.

The Island Kids Child Care Center posted to Facebook Sunday about the Crash, Sierra is a teacher there. They will hold a fundraiser for the family on August 29th from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
