Grand Island man arrested near scene of apartment complex fire

GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. (WKBW) — The Erie County Sheriff's Office announced they have arrested a Grand Island man in connection with the fire at an apartment complex on Ransom Road Thursday night.

Deputies say they responded to a structure fire just before 10 p.m. Thursday with heavy white smoke and an orange glow coming from the building, all residents were evacuated.

While the Grand Island Fire Department was battling the fire, witnesses made deputies aware of a subject, 33-year-old Robert Shoemaker, who was believed to be involved with the incident still on the property.

Shoemaker was taken into custody by deputies and turned over to detectives and fire investigators.

Shoemaker faces felony second degree arson charges, he was remanded to the Erie County Holding Center and is scheduled to be arraigned Friday.

No injuries were reported as a result, Grand island Fire Department estimates the damage at $100,000.
