BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — The fishing has been great this season, Mark McGranahan owner of Sparky's Charters says it's a great time to be out on the water.
He has been a charter captain for 18 years, teaching people how to fish around Western New York.
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced you do not need a license to fish this weekend. They have a guide for beginners walking you through what you need to know.
Captain Sparky says any beginner needs a few basics to get started.
- A spinning or spin-casting pole
- Some hooks
- Worms or other bait
- Scissors or pliers
- A camera for when you get the “hero shot” of catching a fish. Captain Sparky says a "hero shot" is when you hold up a fish and with a big smile.
He recommends these spots to check out for fishing or here's a list from NYS.
- Lake La Salle
- Tifft Nature Preserve
- Oppenheim County Park
If you feel like you can take the next step and head out on a boat, Sparky's fishing charters are open all summer.
