FREDONIA, N.Y. (WKBW) — The Fredonia Police Department is warning residents of a Facebook Messenger scam.

According to the police, scammers posing as "family members" are sending messages on Facebook Messenger stating the person receiving the message won $40,000 and include a photo of an envelope with cash fanned out.

The scammer then provides a link which would ultimately make the receiver pay $1,600 to receive the money.

In this case, police say when the person receiving the messages contacted the family member that was "sending" the messages, the family member had no idea the messages were being sent.

Police say you should never provide anyone with your personal information.
