BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — The week of October 5th is Fire Prevention Week, and Erie County Division of Fire Safety wants to stress preparedness.

"The primary thing you want to do is make sure your family gets out of the house," Daniel J. Neaverth, Jr., Commissioner of the Department of Homeland Security & Emergency Services.

Some major things to know include: keeping doors leading to the fires closed, getting out and staying out of the home, and having a meeting spot for the whole family.

"If we know everyone is out and safe than we can go out and actually extinguish the fire."

Additionally, having an exit plan and plenty of discussions with the family about what to do are very important.

Make sure to know where the fire extinguisher is, and use the PASS acronym to assure you know how to use it.
